When I was studying ballet as a young dancer, I was taught to

 “pull up!”

“stand tall!”

My dance teachers would proclaim to the class as we performed our pliés at the barre.

I never quite understood exactly where to breathe when I was “pulled up” and “standing tall” and doing all sorts of intricate movements with my body. The same concept is seen in many of the classical Pilates exercises.

It wasn’t until I began my journey of becoming a Pilates Instructor that I started to truly understand my full capacity for breath and how to breathe while the abs are engaged.

Here is a movement sequence to help you maximize the capacity of breath into your lungs and ribs.

You’ll need a theraband and a chair or fitball. If you don’t have a theraband, a long towel will work just fine.

Do you feel more open after doing this sequence? Tell me about it in the comments below.

Have a beautiful day!
